Environmental Stewardship

HFM NZ is committed to managing our clients’ forests sustainably and responsibly. It is our goal to protect the future productivity of the land and ensure that over time the soil, water, biodiversity and community values of the forests we manage are maintained or improved. We believe that being good stewards of the environment and working constructively with our stakeholders and the communities in which we operate is crucial to our long term success.

More information about our HFM NZ stewardship programmes can be found in our HFM NZ Public Summary which gives a general overview of our operations.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international not for profit organization established in 1994 and has the mission ‘to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests’.  FSC has a set of 10 Principles and associated criteria which apply internationally.  HFM NZ has been certified to FSC since 2004 (certificate number SCS-FM/COC-00066P, license code FSC-C013109). To be certified to FSC, we are audited annually by independent auditors accredited to FSC.

PEFC Certification

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting Sustainable Forest Management through independent third-party certification. PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards.

PEFC works by endorsing national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions.  In New Zealand the PEFC endorsed standard is NZS AS 4708, a New Zealand adaption of the Australian Forestry Standard. The standard is administered by Standards NZ and was assessed and obtained endorsement by PEFC in 2015.

HFM NZ became certified to NZS AS 4708 in June 2017 (certificate number SCS-NZS-001). To be certified to PEFC we are audited annually by independent auditors accredited by JAS-ANZ and PEFC.

To learn more about PEFC, you can visit the PEFC International Website.  The NZS AS 4708 standard and associated guidance can be obtained from the Responsible Wood Website.
